The Unified Crime Reporting Program is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of approximately 17,000 city, county, and state
law enforcement agencies, voluntarily reporting, data on crimes which is administered by the FBI. The modified crime index (MCI) is composed of selected offenses used to gauge fluctuations in
the overall volume and rate of crime reported to law enforcement. The offenses included are (the violent crimes of (M) murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, (Rape) forcible rape, (Robb)
robbery, and (AA) aggravated assault, and the property crimes of (Burg) burglary, (Larceny) larceny-theft, (MV theft) motor vehicle theft, and (Arson) arson.
Most crimes in the Towns of Carmel and Kent are reported by their residents to their respective police departments. Crimes occurring in the remaining four towns
that comprise PutnamCounty are either reported to the (NYSP) New YorkState Police or the (PCSO) PutnamCounty Sheriffs Office-Department. PutnamCounty is considered one of the most safest
counties in New YorkState and also in the United States.
